Fernandez mulls fate of Tsunami Hill

THE first phase of the P20 million tsunami hill reportedly costing P7 million appears almost complete and the second phase is scheduled to start soon but Acting Mayor Belen Fernandez is reconsidering whether to pursue the project initiated by Mayor Benjamin Lim.

Fernandez doubts the wisdom of the project, which is supposedly where residents of the island barangay of Pugaro should run to in case of a tsunami occurrence.

Fernandez joined officials of the City Engineering Office last week during an inspection of the ongoing construction.

What is being completed is a circular structure made up of piled up boulders which will serve as the foundation of the four-meter high man-made hill.

During her visit, residents voiced to Fernandez their reluctance to use the hill for what it is intended for because it is too close to the Lingayen Gulf.

Fernandez said many residents found the project “ridiculous” because it seems illogical to run seaward to get to the hill in case a tsunami occurs.

They pointed out that in case of a tsunami, the logical thing to do is to run away from the sea to escape the giant waves instead of meeting these head-on by going to the tsunami hill.

City hall observers believe that Pugaro’s residents manifested their opposition by voting overwhelmingly against Lim in the May 13 elections.
