Heading for the Hundred Islands this summer

By March 28, 2010Inside News, News

SUMMER is here and it is time to head for the beach!

One great choice for a summer destination is the Hundred Islands National Park (HINP) in Alaminos City.

Covering an area of 1,844 hectares, the islands are believed to be some two million years old. Some of the islands, totaling 124 during low tide and 123 at high tide, remain unexplored and that adds to the allure of the HINP.

According to one local folklore, the islands were tears of a primeval giant who lost his ladylove. Another tells of the tale of mermaids that once inhabited its seas.

Activities in the Hundred Islands are aplenty: simply strolling along the beaches and dipping into its soothing warm waters; swim and snorkel to watch colorful tropical fishes in a grand coral reef garden; scuba diving; banana boat riding; kayaking; island hopping; parasailing; jet skiing; and bird watching.

The HINP, a declared protected area, is maintained as an environment-friendly tourism facility with its marine sanctuary and set guidelines for protecting the park’s ecology.

The local government and the people in the communities work together in managing the islands as an eco-tourism destination, one that deserves to be called a real “green” treasure of Pangasinan.

And when visiting the Hundred Islands, also take time out to enjoy the rest of the booming city of Alaminos, where an international airport will soon be built.

The city is abuzz with developments and the people have high hopes for a continuing improvement in the future.–Mary Joy Tedoco, LNU.
