Not all that bad

Mr. Ramos, you seem more impressed of Taiwanese than Filipinos that is why I tried to compare the two countries to find out why. What is wrong with that?

I am amazed to learn that you find Taiwan and its people more impressive in spite of the fact that Taiwan has bigger problems than the Philippines.

My amazement is greater when you said that you are all aware that each sovereign nation has its own set of problems and laundry lists to contend with. But that is mild compared to what I heard from some individuals who claimed to be Filipinos.

What is really shocking is how some Filipinos talked and sounded as if there is nothing to be proud of as far as the Philippines and its people are concerned.

Is it really that bad? I do not think so. If it is, what do we need to do as Filipinos? Are we not supposed to improve anything that needs to be improved and to change anything that needs to be changed?

Talking about cleaning your own backyard, the beauty of the parliamentary system of government is that Canadians can easily clean their own backyard when they smell something fishy.

The way Canadians do is much better and makes more sense compared to the options that Filipinos have by using the current antiquated Philippine presidential system of government.

When scandal rocked the ruling Canadian government very recently, an inquiry was conducted. Testimonies to the Commission investigating the scandal significantly weakened the government of the ruling political party by allegations of criminal corruption in the party. Because of the scandal, a motion of no confidence was passed by the House of Commons and the parliament was dissolved.

Canadians held an election and they replaced the previous ruling political party with another whose party leader, the majority of Canadians feel, deserve to be the next Prime Minister.

Canadians do all these things by replacing the Members of the Parliament (MPs) with somebody else whom they feel can represent them better in the national assembly and retaining those who had served them well as their representatives in the previous Parliaments.
