Hillary Clinton takes random poll here

By Jun Velasco

THERE was a time when movie actor James Dean – he with the signature sideburns, standing collar, cigarette in mouth -was the rage of the young here, there and everywhere. .

That “idol” image created a cult, believed responsible for the cigarette smoking craze and up to now abetted by the macho Marlboro man in Cowboy Country.

Some do-gooders, the health buffs particularly are ardently supporting a worldwide drive to boot out smoking, yah, the habit.

Lately they are designing an ad with ghastly pictures of mouth and throat cancer on cigarette packs. That’s a thumb up for health and longevity!

Did you know that tobacco consumption is a P100-billion industry every year? Yes, a little less than the annual Dept. of Education’s P140-billion budget!  Crazy but the anti-smoking group needs support. Can we count on you?

Many people love to watch a fight.  In fact, two much-awaited “brawls” are: 1) the Pacquiao – Marquez rematch in Las Vegas on March 15, and 2) who would win between a woman, Sen. Hillary Clinton, and a black man Sen. Barack Obama, in the series of primaries en route to the US Democratic convention.

Sure looks like the winner in the caucuses is likely to be the next US president.

The worsening recession in the US under Republican President Bush has sealed the coffin of the Republican bet.

A random poll of our friends’ choice between Hillary and the Barack man shows a runaway Clinton win.

University of Luzon‘s intellectual vice-president, Aurora Samson Reyna, says Hillary’s I.Q., experience, platform, action orientation and a “heart for the least and lost in society” and her being a WOMAN (all caps supplied) are her best credentials.

Dr. Cathy Velasco, Dr. Tere Hernaez, owner-president of Little Shoe School in Carmen, Rosales; Brenda Manese, Councilor Farah Decano, Abe Belena, Bulletin deskman Fred Gabot and Gons Duque are for Hillary.

Brod Dante says “I’ll be a flying voter for Hillary.”

Here’s Al Mendoza’s text: “Hillary is not only brilliant but also tough.  Any other woman would have crumbled under the weight of the Monica Lewinsky affair, a woman with erudition and conviction.”

On the other side, Miles Hombrebueno and ex Rotary District Gov. Bobby Viray, Tony Meloto and Cesar Duque find Barack Obama a new John Kennedy and want him to win.

It’s funny many local executives are computer illiterate.

They can now lick the problem. How? Participate in a regional info technology congress at the People’s Astrodome on Feb. 26.  Internet gurus in the country and region are coming.

Get in touch with the organizers by calling their CPs 09276888106 / 09162693298 / 09174029655 and 09195300487.

NOTES:  Thank you, PPRC for the award. Might interest our colleagues that when we were club president in 1971 to 1974, we were delivering speeches almost every other day on the role of the press before Rotary, Jaycees, Lions and other associations. It was tough   defining media’s role under Martial Law.

A brotherly advice to our colleagues: be a journalists first, and PPRC member second.  In the final analysis, they are one. Let’s hope.
