Playing with Fire
Wharton Pennsylvania vs. War-torn Mindanao
By Gonzalo Duque
CHRISTMAS came to LNU early.
Sports-wise and academic-wise, that is.
Why? Obvious! Our Dukes captured last week the Northern Luzon – Central Luzon championship in the Universities and Colleges Athletic Association of Pangasinan (UCAAP) games.
We have hiked our stars to the most coveted Sweet 16 circle, the first in several decades.
Our inspired coach, Nanoy Duque, is always caught whispering “In the name of Jesus” (not Jesus Garcia ha? JG always drops a name that sounds off tangent to LNU! )
The other reason for jubilation is the selection of Miss Dagupan Ms. April Ann Melecio, a Dentistry and Radiologic Technician graduate of LNU.
It’s really a continuing triumph for LNU!
Nope, it doesn’t mean we haven’t tasted defeat. We did. We lost to St. Albert. But, oopps, there’s still another game, fellas? That was the Dagupan City Sports League, a grand collision of some 34 teams at the People’s Astrodome.
But we remain festive. Why?
Basically, the face of sports in Dagupan is being upgraded by our sports officials under the encouragement of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and Supt. Eufrocinia Bravo.
Bravo, Madams!
Yes, wala na yong Mafia mis-rule (better to forget the name Edel).
Did you know that we love to call the mayor Education Mayor?
Because Mayor BTF has been at the forefront of uplifting education in the city.
Look at the Dagupan City National High School! She has been using the city and national funds – not to mention her own personal funds – to undertake physical improvements. Sporting facilities, new gyms, new sports buildings are emerging left and right.
She is unbeatable in performance in this aspect.

At this juncture, we wish to react very quickly to reports that some smart Alecks in the group are coming up with the idea of forming a regional basketball tournament. Must have been inspired by the UCAAP’s success.
Hmmm….this early, we wish to announce that LNU seems not interested to join.

Speaking of losing, we humbly doff to the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) in last week’s clash. Papaano naman? They had imports from Nigeria who stood at 6’9, while our boys were you-know-how short.
But as Coach Nanoy would nonchalantly say, it’s not in the winning or losing always, but in dedicating one’s performance to Jesus.
Don’t forget that universal axiom handed down to us by the Great Scorer –
It’s not in losing or winning that matters really, but in how you played the game.

As we wrote this, the Comelec en banc has just voted for Rody Duterte’s triumph by 6-1.
So, we told you that before!
The road is now being paved for a Duterte presidency.
How can he lose? The D and E classes comprise 90% of our voters. Not the social elite who are sometimes lazy to cast their votes.
Aha? Yong kolkolan nilani Mar Roxas?
Well, we described it thus – Mar is a graduate of Wharton, Pennsylvania, while Duterte, War-torn, Mindanao.
Who cares about the foreign diploma? The battle for the country is right here, including Mindanao, a perennial victim of broken promises.
Duterte will see to it that those problems will now be solved under his presidency.
