Summer escapade

CLASSES have ended- at least in the different schools in the province. Kids are home and this means one thing: summer vacation for the family!

By now, I’m sure your family has already planned where to go and what to do this summer. Some will take a trip outside the province, perhaps even abroad while some will take a trip to one destination in our very own Pangasinan. Those who belong to the first group, there are but too many sites to visit. I’m sure everyone has a list of destination to explore. Those who prefer to stay in the province, there’s nothing to worry as well since Pangasinan is blessed with a lot of  beautiful places including lovely beaches, many of which are in the western part. There are also many resorts in different parts of the province that offer swimming facilities.

My family, since I have nephews and niece around, has been fond of exploring resorts that have swimming pools. Our most recent ‘exploration,’ which was last Sunday, brought us to a pool located on top of a mountain. Our trip to the resort, Roheim Farm and Resort, had us climbing to the peak of Barangay Colisao in San Fabian town. From the town proper, it took us around 20-30 minutes to reach the resort. We traveled mostly through a paved yet narrow path and some bumpy portions as we approached our destination. The view of the corn and tobacco farmlands, the typical “life in the barrio” scene, along with soothing music in the vehicle, entertained us throughout the ride. Roheim’s directional signs along the way were really helpful to first-time visitors.

When we finally arrived in front of the resort’s gate, a sudden realization that the place was, indeed, worth the long ride dawned on me. We’re literally on top of a mountain! The view reminded me of my second home, Baguio City. The nostalgia was reinforced by the view of a “rice terraces.” Getting around the resort required one to walk up and down a pathway. While it took us more steps to take to reach the swimming pool, not one mong the kids nor the adults had any complaint.. We were like communing with nature. Perhaps, this is why the resort’s known as a wellness center. Thanks to the overall lush green vibes provided by the plentiful plants. The nipa huts in the area were, of course, always a hit especially to tourists. My niece was even fascinated by the presence of ducks being raised in one portion of the place.

Another unique aspect of the resort is its “biblical sceneries.” There were replicas of the Gethsemane, Pool of Siloam, Cave of En Gedi, Rock of Horeb, Los Lunas Mystery Stone or The Ten Commandments Rock. Thus, in a way, it can be an alternative site to pilgrims. The place also provides a picturesque view of the Theology Seminary. On top of this, the location gives an amazing view of the Lingayen Gulf.

My family didn’t get a chance to meet the owner of the resort. I would’ve have asked about his/her inspiration and purpose for bravely putting up his business atop a mountain. I have no idea how long the resort has been operating but I must say despite the not-so-convenient ride to reach it, many chose to be there that day. So this summer, your family might consider going up a mountain for a swim.

Still, we have to keep in mind that what really makes a trip or any experience great are the people we share it with. I guess this is the reason why every exploration with my family is special in its own way. Let us all enjoy our vacation, or ‘staycation,’ this summer!
