Grace under pressure

“And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

‘For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord,” Luke 2:9-11

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Even with the arrival of the most joyful season, the country was still experiencing rainy days, somewhat dampening the buoyant spirit.

Many wonder at the unusual character of the weather oblivious of what the scientists have said about climate change.

By the way, former Speaker Joe de Venecia Jr.—let’s greet him on his 78th birthday on December 26—has been addressing world forums on the need for a concerted preparation to climatic issues.

The Holy Bible is crystal clear on these natural cataclysms shaking Mother Earth. Many again died or were devastated in a recent typhoon in the Visayas.

Do not wait for phenomena to strike where we are. Pray that God would shield and protect us. Strengthen our faith in His Love.

Not so far from the De Venecia residence on Tamarind Road at Forbes Park is the venue of Dr. Marco Duque and Dra. Hilki Filart’s wedding, at Sanctuary de San Antonio, also on December 26 evening. Former President Fidel V. Ramos is main wedding sponsor.

Our best wishes to the new couple.

There is continual round of festivities in our home city of Dagupan.

After the city fiesta on December 26, city higher on alumni of Dagupan City National High School will gather at their Alma Mater on December 27 and at the city plaza on the much awaited alumni Night on December 28.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez is guest of honor and speaker.

Senator Grace Poe-Llamanzaves has been thrust into the vortex of political fortunes, having emerged the most viable rival of Vice President Jojo Binay to the presidency in 2016.

The recent popularity ratings tabulated by Social Weather Station of Mahar Mangahas and Pulse Asia have shot her to the totem pole of power even without working for it.

We describe her arrival on the scene as phenomenal. This, our semi fatalistic country that was once ruled by Lemurians believes in destiny, in the intervention by the stars.

The sages have a phrase for it. The highest post in the land may be cajoled, planned most adroitly, schemed by the most, Machiaviellian cunning, but if is not in one’s star, the one courting it would end up in the muck.

The fates of Cory Aquino and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo were vastly different. Cory was thrust to the presidency by “Correee!” “Correee!” “Coreee!!!” Gloria by manipulation, moneypulation and extrapolation.

Gloria plummeted down as fast as she rose to the political stratosphere.

In the case of Grace Poe, most Filipinos believed FPJ won the elections. The outrage turned into a mammoth sympathy when he died.

The people will now convert that outrage, love and sympathy combined for Grace Poe to become president.

The Liberal Party, we heard is taking a new tack to ‘gracefully’ handle the presidential equation to ensure victory in 2016. We also heard that Sen. Grace is trying apparently hard to distance herself from the presidential pressure.

Of course, it would be a breach of propriety and humility if Grace won’t parry the pressures, but for how long?

The pressure and the subject’s steely anchor will define the moment of truth for her ascent to the presidency.

NOTES: Birthday greetings to Engr. Pidong Dawana, a DPWH consultant on December 5. His party at the Star Plaza was superbly attended.
