Media’s rote cited

“Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten,” James 5:3

ONE evening, Senior Supt. Reynaldo Biay, Pangasinan Provincial Director, and Supt. Chris Abrahano, Dagupan Police Station chief, gave meaning to the expression “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” in an informal exchange over the peace and order condition of the province and Dagupan City especially in relation to the drive against the drug menace.

Our community is fortunate to have police officers who are not only among the fittest to run their respective turfs, but are morally fit as well.

Rey Biay, a Mangaldan resident, has a comely deportment, an impressive record, a humble demeanor, common sense, is warm, cordial, and intelligent who knows his cards very well.

Although new in his assignment, he has a commanding view of the crime situation in the province which makes him most capable to give the lie to its unfair label as emerging hub of lawlessness.

Both Abrahano and Biay consider the drug menace the main root of criminality that dents the record of Pangasinan as one of the most peaceful in the country.

In spite of the wild labeling by VACC Chairman Dante Jimenez and lawyer Topacio, the two good-looking police officers cite the records of Dagupan and Pangasinan as above par.

Abrahano who recently scored highly in the fight against drugs (14 drug pushers and addicts were recently arrested) describes the drug menace as “very complex” requiring a very intelligent approach to solve.

The two guys showed a mature approach in dealing with politically tainted issues but showed their acumen in handling them with aplomb.

Unknown to most, Rey and Chris are very good singers. Rey is a member of a family that is engaged in music. Singers from the media including our sports columnist Jess Garcia and Dino Zabala showed they were not push-over in that impromptu sing out.

Ed Maramba, president of the newly organized Philippine Association of Fish Producers Inc., says his colleagues at the PAFPI saw and were impressed at the local media’s full support to his Dagupan fishpond owners group’s anti-illegal fishpens’ and river clean-up drives.

 Media made his campaign public.

Convinced of media’s role in Foofadci’s success, he is now going out of his way to use the same principle in his PAFPI presidency.

Last week, a “dry run” of PAFPI’s organ, The Gulf Star Weekly, made use of Pangasinan On-Line newsweekly per arrangement with Jubeic printers which included our Sept. 4 column “Think About It.”

We fell from our seat when we saw it in On-Line’s because there was no permission for a reprint. In point of fact, we had earlier advised the Gulf Star aka (temporarily) Pangasinan On-Line Balita to whip up an entirely different story by their staff on the new fishing leader, Ed Maramba, based on “some facts” in our column.

We are sorry for this unintended boner. We had texted Punch Publisher Ermin Garcia, a stickler for journalistic ethics, our apologia in behalf of On Line. Like EFG, the new national paper, The Gulf Star Weekly, is committed to the highest ethical norm of newspaper publishing, an assurance given by publisher Ed Maramba and editor Ruben Rivera.

We saw a mini Boracay in Barangay Buenlag in Binmaley Wednesday morning, thanks to University of Luzon President Macky Samson who showed us his resort house (95% finished) beside a lot owned by former Mayor Al Fernandez.

The sitting chair of Dawasa, Macky points to Binmaley’s coastline as “the cleanest, virginal, safest (from a dreaded tsunami) and most alluring “mecca” for retirees and those who want to bask in the magic of nature.

“A Samson family reunion on Christmas Day will have a whole day of fun and frolic in my place. It’s nature at its best!” Macky said, adding “but new constructions owned by a Englishman, an American and another are jutting out left and right in the area.”

To which we said, Mayor Sam’s eco-tourism program must really be making headway. Macky simply scratched his head muttering, “You can’t stop progress.”

IT’s ironic that Health Sec. Enrique Ona is emerging as a tail-ender in acceptability ratings among P-noy’s Cabinet members.

The reason is obvious. He is allergic to the President’s Straight Path (Daang Matuwid) mantra.

In fairness, Ona should be given his day in court, in a similar vein many of P-noy’s allies are going thru.

A wise wag asks, “Why are there so many corrupt officials in the Aquino government?”

Our natural reaction is that “corruption has been going on for centuries! It took Benigno Simeon Aquino to unmask it!

NOTES: Our friend Ashok Vasandani had surgery at the Villaflor Hospital a couple days back. Prayers for his speedy recovery!… Former Kapitan Angel Gumarang’s home is shrouded in sorrow, with the untimely passing of beloved wife, Laida.

Let’s pray for her soul.
