Hope for hopelessness

JOHANNE R. MACOB

MY past article stating that life is a great paradox has been validated.

Indeed, life has a lot of ironies.

The recent calamity that took wreaked havoc in our beloved country demonstrated, and still continues to bare the wickedness and the goodness among our people, and even those living beyond our islands’ territory.

We have seen those who have taken advantage of the situation to put forward their personal interests and give in to their seflsih — even evil — intentions. It’s depressing enough to learn the damages caused by the natural calamity, but it’s way more heartbreaking to know the criminal acts by our fellows.  Most everyone has seen images of these in media.

On the other hand, the tragedy elictied genuine concern and generosity by countless individuals from different parts of the world. The provincial government promptly sent financial assistance to the province of Leyte and Tacloban CityThe governor also sent a memo to all the department heads, to extend a hand and revive bayanihan.

Last week, I learned that some of our Filipinos overseas workers are doing their share for the victims. In Massachusetts, two of our fellow Pangasinenses, Evelyn and Edelyn Baguio of Laoac together with other Pinoys, have initiated a donation ampaign in their area.

And when I visited my secondary school last Thursday, I felt prouder of our kabaleyans as I watched the personnel and students packing noodles, canned goods, emergency-objects as flash lights, loads of clothes and more.

I could go on telling stories of kindness during this time of distress. I’m sure everyone knows at least someone who has presented, or still is showing, the same value. There are even those who are helping in silence.  We are all capable of lending a hand. It doesn’t really matter how what matters most is that we help in the best possible way we can because we want to. Next to God,  we are the greatest hope for hopelessness.

P.S. I pray that no similar or worse catastrophe will befall us again even as I pray that the kindness, generosity, and heart for humanity will continue to grow in all of us.
