Playing with Fire
Brian Lim for city mayor
By Gonzalo Duque
THIS is unsolicited: I am committing my vote to Ms. Gina Perez de Venecia if reports are true that she is running for senator.
She is Haven-sent!
In case you don’t know, Gina, the beautiful wife of Speaker Joe de Venecia, has thousands of friends and admirers all over the world by virtue of her family’s achievements in the movie world.
With her marriage to the Speaker, you can imagine what that means in her vast network of friends and campaigners.
And my, she is vivacious, vibrant and warm, not to mention intelligent. Gina, I can campaign hard for you, and one sure vote is my vote.

My grapevine in Dagupan says Mayor Benjie Lim will field his pogi son, law graduate and brilliant heir-apparent, for Dagupan mayor, probably against Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez.
Many have noticed that wherever Alvin goes, Brian is anywhere there too. Is he shadowing him?
Certain councilors (or clown-cilors) loyal to Alvin will surely have their match who will be fielded by Benjie Lim, who, up to this writing, is still making up his mind whether to run as congressman.
Well, Kuya Joe, wala tayong magagawa, nasa demokrasya tayo e.
May the best man win na lang ha?
Benjie has a big chance. Former congressman ata yan. But, of course, he may not be able to become speaker. That’s tougher business.
Back to Brian, who, in my opinion, is extremely intelligent, mature in attitude and aptitude and very likable.
At this point, I caution Councilors Jojo Guadiz, Joey Tamayo and Farah Decano against opposing or ignoring or playing contravida to the ordinance regulating the operations of fraternities in the city’s colleges and universities.
I don’t know why. These councilors were in favor; at other times, neutral, but in the final time, they were against the measure.
Ok lang, asinger met lay eleksyon aw mantalaran kayo, ta mandiskurso ak ed barbario nipaakar ed ginawa yo.

Our city officials, majority of them, began their tenures with a lot of anomalous deals.
But when the election is nearing, they are suddenly becoming do-gooders. Bumait sila bigla!
Of course, they had already gotten their share of the “loot”, and as if by a pang of conscience, they have changed their style to being do-gooders. Nagiging ok ira suddenly. Marakep met awa? Bright ira! Congratulate yo pa ra a.
But bahala na kayo if you still want to vote for them. Adungisan lay lima da balet? Well, somebody said, only fools don’t change their minds. So, I say to you, akaoley kayo la. I merely want to unmask their true color.

Dagupan elections, strictly speaking, are a war between who is the lesser evil, not between who is better. Well, they are going global. The fight against graft and corruption is global. And our own Ombudsman is doing its best in compliance with this world trend in geopolitics.
Close to home, I have seen the not so good record of our officials, particularly in our beloved and unfortunate city. You know what I mean. Daming corrupt dito.
Watch out because the Ombudsman is about to descend upon them.

I am delighted to know that the recent Asean and Asian summit in Cebu has made a breakthrough on various fronts, and especially on labor-related issues.
What is now coming out is that we shall soon have a United Asia with the People’s Republic of China as our leader. This is inevitable with the growing borderless world that we are all in.
Credit our petite president for her masterful handling of the summit. The country, I learned, spent some close to Pl billion for it, but it earned more than $l.5 excluding an unquantifiable goodwill worldwide.
