Sonny Coloma inspires Dagupan Rotarians

By Jun Velasco

Look and you will find it – what is unsought will go undetected.” –Sophocles

THE media lately had a bizarre portrait of a detained daughter – once “invincible” former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo – going through a tough time asking the Sandigan Bayan permission to visit on All Saints Day and All Souls Day the tombs of her heroic parents, former President Diosdado Macapagal and his wife, the former Eva Macaraeg, at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The study in contrast graphically shows the clash between good and evil, between the law-abiding and the law violator which should convulse our conscience in this Day of the Departed.

We used to say how Filipinos kissed the feet of Ate Glow – or Ate Glue – depending on your political color.

Now that she is down, many of us with pretentions for virtue are avoiding her like the plague.

We live in an imperfect world. It would be best to observe prudence and humility at all times because we do not know what awaits us around the bend.

As we reflect on our departed loved ones, the fine memories they have left behind, it would probably be well to stay humble and let God direct our steps, so that we won’t lose our way.

Most of us who are disturbed by the vast Nightmare that descended on the world’s most modern center of progress, New York City, remember with dread the much talked-about Mayan Prophecy.

Four or so months ago, Prof. Jimmy Licauco came to Dagupan and spoke before Rotarians and the media about the Mayan’s prediction that after 26,000 years, the earth and the other planets would form a straight line. The day was fixed either on Dec. 21 or 22 or 23 this year, and that’s about soon. “It’s 22,” says Jimmy Licauco.

He blamed the planetary movement for the radical climatic changes, the disasters, floods, storms, earthquakes, because the old locations are being drastically changed.  Change, you know, especially, drastic change, hurts, dislocates, kills.

“No, no, I never said ‘the world will end,’ marami nang pastor, priests and other religious leaders ang galit sa akin because I was quoted accurately,” he told us.

On Sandy’s nightmarish devastations, Jimmy sent us this text message,” This Frankenstorm) was predicted by Mayan Prophecy in general and by Edgar Cayce and Ruth Montgomery’s guides in particular.”

He added something that jolted us from our seat. “Expect more to come,” he said, adding, “the whole planet is trying to heal itself from the wounds inflicted upon it by man.”

Our younger brod Pio Velasco Jr., alyas Boy (although he should have been the Jun Velasco in the family; we were named after father Pio Sr.’s father Juan Velasco) sent us a timely Biblical text — Isaiah 54:10: “though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the Lord who has compassion in you.”

Pangasinan Rotarians led by AG Fred Caguioa of District 3790 and host Downtown president Tony Manuel had an enjoyable evening with Presidential Communications Operations Officer Sonny Coloma, himself a former District governor in Metro Manila, at their Area Meeting last Tuesday evening.

In a text message to this writer, Sonny – an old pal from way back – said “maraming salamat for making the event possible… very heart warming interaction especially with fellow Rotarians…” He gave a longer message which modesty discourages us from printing.

Before his date with the Rotarians, Sonny had more than an hour dialogue with media at the adjacent room “Pearl Room” with PIA Dagupan chief Venus Hortaleza-Sarmiento (daughter of our friend Behn Fer Hortaleza) as moderator.

Sonny almost missed the event due to a last-minute call from the President who scheduled an 11:30 A.M.  briefing for members of the Laos delegation this week. Sonny is one of them.

He was able to squeeze some 5-hour lively and informative talk with media and Rotarians which showed his inimitable persona as an excellent media-Rotary leader and model spokesman of the President and of the nation.

We hinted to him that our PEN (Poets, Essayists, Novelists) group officers will just take their oath before the President thru his intercession soon.  Let’s thank Cesar Carpio, chair of the interim group, for the PEN posters he made and posted on the walls of Pearl Room.

NOTES: A couple in Barangay Ambonao is profused with gratitude to Neil Galang, Australia-based civic and humanitarian leader, for saving their daughter from an abusive Australian husband.  The rescue effort was initiated by Wilson de Vera and Ferdie Galang, younger brod of Neil. The Galang brothers are the sons of our late friend former Calasiao Vice Mayor Ben Galang…. Gov. Spines and Vice Gov. Ferdie led the provincial government to receive the prestigious DILG Pamana ng Lahig governance regional award in Vigan City Tuesday evening en route to the national awards this month.  Congrats!
