Think about it
Try Tony Rala’s idea
By Jun Velasco
AMID the nonstop wave of criminality worldwide, a close kin, former adman-turned evangelist Antonio Rala came up with a simple but, in our view, powerful scheme to preempt criminal acts in buses, jeepneys, including their terminals.
Couched in a letter addressed to DOTC Usec Dante Velasco, these are the salient points:
If purchased at reasonably low cost, the cameras could be purchased by operators with ease. These cameras can prevent criminal acts including theft, armed robbery, hostage taking, bombings, terrorist attacks, and other forms of violence.
Video clips, the letter says, can serve as evidence in the solution of crimes.
When presented to the Land Transportation Office, NCR Director Jojo Guadiz wore a long face saying the operators might view it as another expense.
We said on balance it’s better than risking life and limb to violent people who are on the increase these days.
“It is a sad fact that many incidents involving unlawful property-grabbing through violent means, terrorism and the like inside passenger buses and other public transport vehicles are committed due to lack of monitoring equipment,” Tony’s the letter concluded.
To the proposal, Usec Dante sent this text message, “Sounds good! We will make it part of franchise application.”

Our London-based sister Mita came home to attend the baptism of her apo, Fredrick Rolf, son of Roderick and the former Twinkle Cruz.
At a despedida for Mita Wednesday evening in our old home in Barangay Malued, she recalled her meeting with “a lovely couple five years ago, General Joe Calimlim and his beautiful wife, the former beauty queen, Cristina Zerrudo,” parents of Vice Gov. Ferdie Calimlim, in a 5-star London hotel.
We recalled that meeting which was full of love and sweet remembrances because, as Mita put it, “ it traced close relationships.” The recollection of the Calimlims at the modest party which was attended by Twinkle’s pretty mother, Linda Balangue Cruz, was also meant as a send-off to Mrs. Cristina Calimlim en route to a happy reunion with late husband Joe, who died a couple of years back,
The couple is now enjoying eternal rest in God’s country.

We agree with fellow columnist Gons who describes the “ngasngasan” in the Dagupan City government a sign of dynamic democracy… ditto with Al Mendoza who has asked Mayor Benjie Lim to serenade Vice Mayor Belen to soften her heart because music is the universal language of love and peace… eyes swiveled to our direction while we had a round of coffee with P-Noy look-alike at the Orchids coffee shop last Tuesday afternoon. We told Venancio Medina, a migrant from Tarlac with a successful shoe store bearing his name he could be a good stand-in for the President but he begged off, “I might be besieged by ladies, magagalit si Mrs.”
Hearty welcome to balikbayans Romy Tamondong and wife, the former Maci Claveria, and our cumpadre Rufo Jasmin and wife, the former Viring Claveria, who are all residents of Montreal, Canada.
They said they keep tab of Pangasinan goings-on through the Punch website and consider Ermin their hero for it.
