Lakay’s health secret revealed

By Jun Velasco

SUDDENLY, Lakay Condring Estrella, the senior, is “top of the week” conversation piece in the province.

Why so?

Because he upstaged everyone when he sprightly showed up at the Capitol to address World War 2 veterans during the celebration of the Lingayen Gulf landings.

Later on the same day he eulogized former Gov. Nancy Q. Sison at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

Now 93, former Gov. and Agarian Minister Estrella displayed a sharp memory. He recalled in detail his conversation with Gen. Douglas MacArthur in July l961 at the Capitol veranda when the general told him where he first landed during the liberation. He pointed to a beach area at the back of the Capitol.

You see, there has been a lingering debate as to the exact spot in Pangasinan where he landed. Let’s hope the lakay’s revelation should settle the issue once and for all.

What’s the lakay’s health secret? He said it’s his philosophy of life. He said he doesn’t preoccupy himself with thoughts and acts that serve his personal interest. He said he thinks more of others especially God, quoting the Bible to stress his point. He who thinks mostly of himself will lose his life, but if he does it for God and others, he’d find it.

At the necro rites, he recalled their days at the Capitol, he as governor and Nancy as vice governor. She was a devoted public servant, starting as a Lingayen councilor at age 2l.

The rites were solemn, but his eulogy was spiced with memories and anecdotes that energized the mind about the past.

We missed the Conquerors’ meeting other Saturday. We had a previous appointment with our man in Taiwan, MECO chairman Amadito Perez. In the evening, daughter Kharmina was sweating it out at the Nazareth Hospital for her first baby, a boy, Gian Carl Talaue.

But we had an hour-long chat with Usec Dante at the Star Plaza with former Usec Inri Mendoza, consultant to Governor Chavit Singson, and Board Member Ranjit Shahani’s “right hand” Doy Bascos. We looked into an idea that could vitally develop the north via a vital transport project.

Dante’s first months as DOTC undersecretary has thrust him in the public eye as articulate spokesman of the transportation industry.

A trained communicator, he simplifies complex issues to educate the public in a forthright manner.

When we were kids, we played hide and seek under groves of coconut trees in our little home in Barangay Malued.

One day, a drying coconut fruit fell beside us that frightened us no end.

When Cupid shot an arrow to our heart, Little Dan showed a knack for steering the mind to a straight line. His deep faith has been his constant guide.

It’s a blessing to have a brother with a Christian heart.

In case you don’t know yet, there are other Pangasinense talents on the forefront of the country’s transport industry. Bayambang’s pride, Cesar Terrado Quiambao, is at the helm of Stradcom Corporation that links up the Land Transportation Office with modern Information Technology.

He was in the news headlines recently when an illegal group tried but failed to grab Stradcom from him, being its founder and rightful owner.

Of course, you all know former Dagupan Counilor Teofilo “Jojo” Guadiz Jr., LTO director of the National Capital Region.

Another Dagupan city national high alumnus, Atty. Hernando Cabrera, is corporate secretary and spokesman of both Light Rail Transit Authority and Metro Transit Authority.

Engr. Rodrigo Bulario, brod in law of our old friends Nick And Bonie Pertierra of Calasiao, is LRT’s project engineer.

The pretty lady at the helm of LRTA’s public relations department is alumna Lyn Paragas, of the old UPANG.
