Pangasinan, an embarrassment

Pangasinan (and Ilocano) indeed are dying dialects (or language if you so prefer to call it as such).
To my dismay, many of the Ilocanos and Pangasinense’s are embarrassed to speak their native tongue. They constantly switch to Tagalog even if they are engaged in a conversation with a person they know for a fact to be an Ilocano or Pangasinan speaker. It seems that these people are ashamed to be called an Ilocano or Pangasinense. They look up to the Tagalogs as the superior culture or ethnic group.
I was shocked to hear people who I grew up with in the barrio speaking to their children in Tagalog. It reminds me of a long time ago of people who had set foot in Manila coming back to the barrio speaking Tagalog. “Hindi ako marunong magsultop ng bisukol”. Pure bull crap.
