Eye of the storm

By Jun Velasco

MAYOR Benjie Lim’s blitz action on the notorious illegal fishpens has perplexingly worried the illegal fishpens’ number one critic, Alfredo Dawana, the man who wanted to destroy all the illgal fish pens. Dawana fears the mayor might really mean to dismantle all the fishpens including the legit. It would result in the disappearance of bangus in the market, Dawana said.

Boy Rayos looks at Apring with pity. He said, “we have a Pangasinan phrase for that, “inatey so angabil.”

Boy hopes Benjie will “moderate” his anger but prays the evil that has plagued our rivers — illegal fishpens — would be crushed completely to bring back the glory days of the world-famous bangus industry.

It’s been a long time Dagupenos have waited for this steely mayoral action.

Benjie finds a spokesman in Mayor Fred Lim who has a famous quote, “the law shall be applied to all or none at all.”

UP to this writing, we have been receiving a flurry of text messages, outright calls in our cellphone and house phones about brod Dante, newly appointed undersecretary of transportation and communications who is in television’s news headlines everyday.

We thank them on his behalf and asked a few friends to pray for his success.

There’s hardly a day we’re not swapping views about his baptism of “fireworks” but he looked relaxed about the labor dispute in PAL.

The public is in a hubbub for obvious reasons. The economy including our improving tourist industry is anxious. The labor dispute has caused tens of thousands of PAL passengers dry, failing to meet appointments, which meant  lost business opportunities of untold amounts. Tragic because these hapless victims have nobody to turn to for redress of grievances.

Simply booking with another airliner is not the issue… but the need to keep sending up PAL’s aircraft, the national flag carrier, because moving people around is its reason for existence and moral obligation.

As we all know, delayed or cancelled flights are a nightmare to travelers, particularly foreign tourists with their almighty dollars.

Over a cup of coffee, Holcim Vice President Beng Velasco-Prado wondered how Dan was handling the dispute. We said it looked like routine to him.

You should see his Makati office churn out press releases daily in lightning speed. The only difference now is he finds himself at the storm center, no longer the communications manager and news and info dispenser.

Dan doesn’t say it, but we find his boss, Sec. Ping de Jesus seemingly enjoying his handle of a management-labor war. Let’s pray for its solution soon for the sake of the economy.
