Jig Seen, a professional flutist

By Jun Velasco

WE find greenhorn Councilor Jig Seen, son of our old pal Susing, a rare bird in culture-hungry Dagupan.

His virtuoso-like playing with the flute ranks him among the select talents in the city. We believe it was this talent that has landed in the hearts of Dagupeno voters, ranking him 6th in the l0-man winning column, even a slot ahead of the popular Alfie Fernandez, earlier rumored as Maybeline’s and Brian Lim’s top slot rivals.

Jig says his committee is the city’s non-government organizations, which is, if you come down to it, a gem of an opportunity. We told him in a chance meting at the Asiana that mobilizing the NGOs hereabouts would place him at the center court of all the city’s civic spirited and volunteer groups which is a huge banana, if you’d pardon the term. It’s like waking up a sleeping giant if he knows how and has the resolve to do it.

Being a former Jaycees president and incoming vice president of the Metro Dagupan Chamber of Commerce and Industry under the beauteous Lily Yuchongtian, Jig should be at home in a moribund-turned lively committee.

Go for it, Jig!

Last week, we chastised our countrymen who are easily piqued by clumsy hands in the new government. We said these whiners, if they are sincere Noynoy admirers, should just mind their own business and private turfs, making them productive and supportive of the national effort.

We posited the view somewhere that the local community being a microcosm of Philippine society is a myriad of vested interest groups. It would really take a herculean effort to push the rock of Sysyphus to lift the country from the pits.

But try as best as we can to lend a hand.

Noynoy’s use of simple symbols such as the wang-wang which should show his bias for the simple and austere approaches to governance has inspired the poor of his sincerity. It will be a hard and perilous odyssey to success, but the guy who has seen it all — from his father’s tragic end and mother’s sacrifice-laden presidency — will prevail. It should be our people’s well-deserved gift after all these years of suffering.
