Playing with Fire
“Dagukan City” and “Sangganoang Panlungsod”
By Gonzalo Duque
WE don’t like what’s starting to boil at the Dagupan City Council — or better still, Sangganoang Panlungsod (SB).
We are not exactly swallowing hook, line and sinker what neophyte Councilors Brian Lim and Red Mejia told us in a chance encounter at Pedritos over the weekend. The duo were crying their bruised hearts out for getting inferior committees from whoever designated them chairs respectively of the Urban Poor and Cooperatives, seemingly inferior ones compared to well, you all know the big ones.
Hmmm… kauupo nyo lang ha, nagkakainitan na. Agay met latan ya kagagawa, agagui, imbes ya natambal so sugat na eleksyon, nitan kila, bakbakan lan tampol. Paaaralem yoy sugat.
Do you think Mayor Benjie Lim will take this lying down? Ni, former mayor itan, former congressman ni. Antatoy raket yo.
We can only wish him, the new mayor, not to be distracted by negative actuations. The rather drab treatment is reminiscent of divisive politics.
We read earlier in this paper that Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez pledged to cooperate with Mayor Lim. To which we said, ok pala itong si Belen, statesmanlike.
Frankly, though they say that first impression is lasting, we appeal to the neophytes to think of the larger interest, lingwanan yo pala tay palikdoan. Tapos na ang boksing, mantutulongan itayo la. Sika, Vice Mayor Belen, this is your golden opportunity to show our fellow Dagupenos that you will lead by the best policy, agka padidiktaan na narrow partisanship. You have a great future. Not only that, babantayan ka na agaylay karakul ya bimotos ed sika.
Steer the council out of war politics.
The council, it must be stressed, could be a creator of tug-of-war politics, or a magnificent vehicle for healthy and meaningful local legislation. In the first, all the council will do is pass ordinances that will only be vetoed by the mayor ad infinitum. O, anto ey, di paktaylo so baley. Siopay akankasalan ey? Dirty politics! Is this what we want in Dagupan? Magmaliw lan Dagokan City!
We hope our cumpadre, Councilor Chito Samson will act as a Kissinger being the most senior there and President Noynoy’s trusted point man in the city.
Maawa kayo sa bayan. Ibasyo yo latay destructive politics. Nonot yoy karaklan.

The PRISSA games in Dagupan will officially start on July 22 at the newly renovated People’s Astrodome.
Our LNU Dukes is (ahem, ahem…) defending champion. We expect – and we are prepared — UL and UPANG — to come up with their best feet forward.
For the information of the public, LNU is modernizing its gym to give Astrodome a run for its money. We salute former Mayor Al Fernandez for what it did for Astrodome.
Our modernization work has been okayed by FBA. The gym will have an aircon kitchen so that the facility would be rented out later for social gatherings, parties like weddings, etcetera. It will have a tie up with the LNU hotel, which is being constructed, complete with an ample parking area.
Go for the gold, athletes!
