Re: The need to be assertive
Dear Vicky Carrera,
I always experience the same. Here in Calfornia or in Philippines, if you claim that you are from Pangasinan immediately the response 98 percent of the time is “So you are Pangalatok”.
Yes, you are right. Let us be assertive. I always assert in a very respectful way with a smile to correct them that people from Pangasinan are called Pangasinense. They are not to be called Pangalatok which is derogatory and offensive.
Pangalatok means Pangasinense sira toktok. Our dialect is Pangasinan –NOT Pangalatok, Pangalatot, Pangalatit, Pangalatot, Pangalato etc. These words are so rampantly used all over the Philippines including our home Province. It is because of IGNORANCE.
Indeed, we PANGASINENSES, must be assertive and not to be shy to correct people. You will be surprised if you correct them and the 100 percent response is “I did not know”. They are so surprised. Indeed, it is because of ignorance.
Again, fellow Pangasinenses, let us correct people; even journalists and some professionals and government officials are ignorant of this proper way of referring to people of Pangasinan.
WE are PANGASINENSES–we are not to be called or our language to be called Pangalatok, Pangalatot, Pangalatit, Pangalatik or Pangalato etc. All these words are derogatory and offensive in their connotative definition.
Very nice opinion, Vicky Carrera!!!!.
