Dagupan Police Station is best in community relations
By Eva C. Visperas
More good news happening in Pangasinan!
Of course, you have read about our fellow Pangasinenses topping the recent nurses’ board exams. Also, the number one in the last bar exams, though not a native of this province, traces her roots to Dagupan City through the de Venecia blood line.
Last week, I reported about the feat of the children’s choir of Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Calasiao in the recent World Choir Games in China winning second honors.
Also last month, Justine Vinluan Gabionza, a beauty whose mother is from Binmaley town, bagged the Miss Tourism World crown and was even acknowledged by President Arroyo in her recent SONA. We saw her there at the Batasan Hall.
Now, the latest.
This city’s police station was adjudged as the Best City Police Station in Police Community Relations in the entire country by the Philippine National Police.
Supt. Edgar Basbas, city police chief, said the awarding was held last Monday in Camp Crame’s multi-purpose center in Quezon City in a simple yet meaningful ceremony graced by Presidential Chief of Staff Michael Defensor and PNP Chief Director General Oscar Calderon.
The awarding was the culminating activity of the 11th Police Community Relations Month with the theme “Pulisya at Mamamayan: Ibayong Pagkaka-isa at Pagtutulungan Tungo sa Pambansang Kapayapaan at Kaunlaran.”
Basbas said the city won the award for its notable projects like the Police Beat System where policemen in tandem and in eight teams patrol the busy business districts of the city from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. that dramatically brought down the number of crimes in the area.
He added that their community-based policing system project like the “Task Force Bantay Dagupan” with volunteers from civic organizations, and the Dagupan Practical Shooting Association’s support for the police force in crime prevention through monitoring and intelligence data gathering.
Basbas said 80 percent of police work depends on police community relations. And, therefore, it is important that the police make the people feel secure in their community through good working relationship.
When he was still the deputy provincial director of the Pangasinan Police Office, I’ve often interviewed Basbas for my police news. Often perceived as a strict guy, Basbas wants jobs done efficiently. A quiet person, he is admired by his men for his dedication.
Of course, there are still police concerns that need to be done which the police chief is trying to address. It’s all just a matter of time before we get the desired results.
