Re: Wanted: A government that leads by example
Mr. Carrera,
Please don’t judge the average Filipinos as corrupt. Many vote the way they do because of the lack of political savvy or lack opportunity. It is hard, even for those with education, to get ahead unless they possess money or connections.
Yes, there are those who sell their votes to the highest bidder but what would you do if you saw your children going to bed hungry or if you are promised a better life?
The Ampatuans and other warlords and/or politicians gained their success through promises, pesos and coercion. Much of this can be overcome when people stop relying on the government for their every need. Yes, there may be casualties but there are always casualties when people demand their rights.
I am not advocating a violent overthrow of government but the type that Ghandi and King professed. When people refuse to eat the carrots dangled in front of them, the politicians lose their control.
Elect representatives who want less government not those who were former movie stars or kins of other politicians. Take every promise the politicians make with a grain of salt.
The Filipinos are inherently good, honest people. All they need is the opportunity to establish their businesses without big brother constantly looking over their shoulders.
Government has its place, to defend the nation and its people, not to look after them from birth to death.
One of the founders of the U.S. Constitution, Thomas Jefferson, once said, “A government big enough to give you everything you want is also strong enough to take everything you have.”
