A Kabaleyan’s Thoughts…
Stewardship of the Earth
By S. Bill Jimenez
“HUMANITY is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world’s scientists
are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.”
That’s from the film, “An Inconvenient Truth,” which features the crusade of former Vice President Al Gore on global warming. My wife and I watched the eye-opening documentary film, which aims to awaken people from their lethargy and skepticism. After watching the film, we were convinced that the message is right and timely. Al Gore was impressive in his presentation, and the comprehensive facts and statistics truly support his passionate crusade.
Our recent vacation in Alaska reinforced our belief on global warming as we saw at close range the melting glaciers. The Lord God placed us on Earth as stewards and managers so we should do our best to protect and preserve it. God gave us the mandate and responsibility to care for this unique planet.
Science and technology have tremendously advanced but we wonder if this is blessing or a curse. Sometimes these advances threaten the destruction of the planet through some unintended consequences due to misuse and abuse.
Other advances should be tapped therefore to counteract the disastrous effects of technologies by devising ways and means to reduce global warming. Governments, organizations and businesses throughout the world should do everything possible within their means, power and ability to promote changes and policies that will stop or minimize the negative impact of practices and procedures being used.
As we enjoy the luxuries brought about by modern technology like cars and appliances, let’s see to it that we are not harming the environment.
Since God commissioned us to be rulers and caretakers of the Earth, we have our individual and personal responsibilities to contribute in alleviating the problem of global warming.
A flyer of the “An Inconvenient Truth,” suggests “Ten Things to Do” for people who want to help reduce global warming:
1) Change a light. Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
2) Drive less. Walk, bike, carpool or take mass transit more often. You’ll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don’t drive.
3) Recycle more. You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.
4) Check you tires. Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve gas mileage by more than 2%. Every gallon of gasoline saves keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere!
5) Use less hot water. It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less water by installing a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of CO2 saved a year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year).
6) Avoid products with a lot of packaging. You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%.
7) Adjust your thermostat. Moving your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and up to 2 degrees in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
8) Plant a tree. A single tree will absorb one tone of carbon dioxide a year.
9) Be a part of the solution. Learn more and get active at ClimateCrisis.net.
10) Spread the word!
As good citizens of the world, let’s all contribute in its proper conservation through good stewardship.
