The Youth Today: Reborn

By Gregor A. Sajonas

Less than a year from now, people’s right to suffrage will be exercised, and it is important for the youth to show that they are the hope of the nation that can bring optimism for a change, for good.

Gone are the days when the youth were just passive and had no care on what was happening around. The youth now are different, for as they slowly absorb cultures which are not Filipino made while embracing nationalism, are now geared for any battle that may affect their future in the country. In fact there have been many avenues channels or ways where the youth have been challenged to get involved in and to participate.

Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) proves the youth are active and that they play a vital role in nation building even through small means. The youth get involved even in programs that do not directly cater to them because, truly, the youth want to get involved, and are hungry for development and change.

Among the recent programs being promoted to encourage the youth to be more vigilant in the coming 2010 elections are AKO MISMO, AKO ANG SIMULA AND TATAKBO AKO (a national movement that reaches out the youth) and IBA ITO KASALI KA (a local movement headed by the student leaders from different universities and colleges in Pangasinan).

Their common aim is to make people more conscious, more participative and of course, more vigilant not only for now, not only for the coming 2010 elections but in every opportunity to become the catalysts for change.

The youth today are competitive and mature enough to understand the aims of the movements knowing fully well that they play a very significant role in the coming 2010 elections, representing a big number of voters and the critical factor that can spell the success of a certain candidate.

Today’s youth can be expected to step-up and have the courage to lead.
