Ineffective public school policy

My first posting was a reflection of PGMA’s previous SONA’s where she mentioned how she addressed the needs of the Philippine education system.

Many years later, we see the same situation. On July 27, we will watch and hear again another SONA from PGMA and we can almost be certain that we can hear her mention some of her accomplishments and more plans.

My biggest concern is the education of the Filipino children and how their leaders could fix it. My first posting was my observations first hand when we visited the Philippines this summer.

Comparing my elementary years to the present, I can say that we were a lot better off then considering the scarcity of so many things during those times. I see the deterioration of the Philippine’s school system.

Very few of the school children from the Philippine public schools coming to States could express themselves even though they were grades three and above. I had quite a number of students from the Philippines who struggled adjusting in a classroom, not because of their new environment but because they hardly could communicate or express themselves.

Most transferees who were in high school suffered more academically and were inferior with their peers because they lagged behind and in the process they became drop-outs. They could not tackle the school work.

Unfortunately, tutorial services in the States are expensive and often times, parents can’t afford. The situation itself gave us a picture and impression on how Philippine public education system is.

On the other hand, students coming from Philippine private schools, show competitiveness. Most of them are able to survive and match their peers.

We see the huge gap of the rich between the poor when new students from the Philippines enter our school.
So many Filipino children are deprived of their right to get quality education and this is a fact.
