Writing with a Purpose

By Johanne Macob

“Writing is an enlargement of the self.”

Well, I write because I want to, sometimes because I need to, and still sometimes, because of both. Whatever the reason might be, one thing’s constant: writing enlarges me. Writing broadens my views on different things and stretches my mind, especially the imaginative side. It also expands my heart – for my emotions are put into writing.

At this point in my life, writing serves two main functions. First, writing as an academic requirement and second, writing as a means of self-expression. As a hobby, writing is my way of having fun while expressing my thoughts, from the superficial to the most intimate ones. I have not found a better means of feeding my egocentric sentiments than writing. It is something I think I am a bit good at, or at least, happy with. Good thing at certain times, the two functions interrelate, meaning some of my writings are both for academic and “self-expression”. But whatever purpose my writings may fulfill, what is most important is that there is a purpose.

Being realistic, I am not limiting my goal to just pursuing a very “writing career”, such as working in the print industry. But that doesn’t make the value of writing to my life any less. When it comes to simply writing your private thoughts, your mind has no limits. That is why I love putting my idea on paper, it may seem a silent act but my heart and mind goes into the paper, something tangible. Yes, I may not be a professional writer (yet) but I am a writer. I may not benefit others at all times with my writings but at I at least I get a sense of self-fulfillment. Writing makes my existence more interesting, more fun, more worth living. Now, let me ask you, what does writing serve you?
