Macapagal – De Venecia merry-go-round

By Gonzalo Duque

SAN FRANCISCO, California- Color USA political, that’s it, as the presidential election campaign, is about to wind up.

The US press says it’s Barack Obama leading John McCain by a few points in the surveys, but it has a way of keeping everyone in bloody suspense, because as it said yesterday (Thursday here) the Republican bet beat Obama in their third and last debate.

Akaaral la ran talaga ed Pinas awa for keeping everyone in utter suspense and excitement. But the real issue that’s wrenching the guts of every Amerikano is the massive collapse of the dollar. Nice thing the US government is going through the motions to save the free enterprise-based economy from total annihilation.

O, wadtan ka la lamuet, Jun V, ibagam “talon na naman ang America ng sosyalistang China.” Ok, you know, when were in our younger days we, Jun and us, used to debate over which economic system was better, free enterprise or socialist, with Jun and Nestor Pulido commanding the supremacy of the socialist system, which posits power in government over the private sector.

Now that the US government is taking the bull by the horns, so to speak, to lift the privates from total collapse, does that not clearly show that a fair amount of government control of the affairsof ego-tripping privates is a must? Argue Nestor and Jun.

But so much for this capitalist-socialist debate. Our faith in the resiliency of the democratic system is such that eventually the US economy will bounce back. Hey, it’s not only the US economy that’s hurting but the entire world economy.

Sana mapag aralan ng mundo ang No. l virtue ng Pinoy: resiliency, pliant like the bamboo, ika nga. Para sa atin, walang kwenta yang bagsakan tayo ng anomang sakuna (pero, huag naman po, mahal na Panginoon ) What we’re saying is we, Filipinos, have learned to adapt ourselves to any situation, come hell or high water. Ang mga Kano kasi iyakin, tayong mga Pinoy, idinadaan na lang sa pag-inom ng beer at isa pa nga, ayos na.

* * *

Even while we were meeting US-based Pinoys here, we got wind of the local issues in the homeland topped by the filing of another impeachment complaint by Joey de Venecia and his group against our dainty Presidenta.

Mag -proprosper ba ito, mga igan? Well, your guess is as good as ours, ika nga. Baka lang political ploy Ni Joey who, we learn, is gunning for the senate while Congressman Joe’s wife, Gina, is running for congress.

If you ask us, we’d advise Joey to just wait for the 20l0 elections, tutal malapit na.

We’re curious where Joey inherited his political skills, from the erpat or from the lolo? He is the grandson of the late and former Speaker Eugenio Perez Sr., you know.

Allow us to refresh your minds. It was Speaker Perez who convinced then Senator Diosdado Macapagal to run for vice president under Jose Yulo of the Liberal Party.

See the pattern of history? It was also then candidate for President Jose de Venecia, erpat of Joey, who took in Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as his running mate. In both cases, nanalo ang Macapagal, talo ang presidential candidates. Vote getter ang Macapagal e.

Seems to us the Joey de Venecia impeachment move against PGMA is awkward kasi dati mga loyal allies ang dalawang pamilyang yan!

We are at a loss as to what would happen next. Will Joey succeed in toppling Gloria from the Palace? Mukhang malabo ata.
