The drug-dealing kapitan

BEBOT VILLAR

By Bebot Villar

PERSONALLY, I am happy about the appointment of the new PNP Chief, Gen. Ricardo Marquez who we know is a strong advocate against illegal drugs. Kaya dapat heads-up si Pangasinan OIC-PD P/Sr. Supt. Rolie Saltat. He will have to double time to cope with the agenda of the new PNP Chief. This is a good partnership!

Meanwhile, one can only wonder how many of our barangay captains are already considered notorious. This situation has made many in the communities hesitant to cooperate or participate in the community because of these corrupt barangay officials!

How can they join the anti-drug abuse council if the officers they will work with are selling illegal drugs themselves? This is likely one of the main reasons why no amount of efforts by local government units to reactivate the anti-drug abuse council ay hindi magawa!

This is the opportune time to evaluate our barangay officials. Can they still be trusted? These rotten barangay officials don’t deserve to remain in their offices because they use their influence to sell drugs and destroy families! The coming elections will be our best chance to change our environment. ‘Wag na tayong magpaloko sa mga mapagkunwaring lingkod-bayan ngunit alagad pala ng demonyo!

But because these barangay captains are into illegal drugs, of course, they have lots of cash to buy the votes! ‘Yan ang magiging turning-point for our voters. Will they go for money from drugs or will they go for peaceful community free from illegal drugs??

Let us help each other oust these corrupt barangay officials now before they start aiming to become councilors or mayors. Kung sa barangay level ay tinotodas na nila ang kanilang mga kababayan, imagine the harm they can do with wider influence. When that happens, our province might just as well be a big shabu warehouse!

Look at Col. Christopher Abrahano in Dagupan City. Grabe talaga ang effort niya at full support din sa kanya si Mayor Belen Fernandez, but still, a “Drug-Free Dagupan” is still not achievable. Why?

Because may mga barangay kapitan who are keen on getting rich quickly by protecting illegal drugs. But, siyempre, may alam si Kapitan diyan! At huwag na huwag magde-deny!!

I have always known that it’s the barangay kapitan that gives the “go signal” to do business in the barangay. Only he decides what can happen and should happen in the barangay, wala nang iba! Magtanga-tangahan man ang mga kapitan na ito o hindi, everyone knows na sila mismo ang “konek” for drug-pushing in the barangay.

This is the challenge to Chief of Police Abrahano. But knowing him, I’m sure he already hatched a plan for these corrupt kapitans. Mabuti na lang at talagang tandem sila ni Mayor Fernandez in the mission to save the city from the evils of illegal drugs.

A few days ago, the re-elected Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) chief, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, issued a pastoral letter condemning the illegal drugs trafficking and called on the church and the government to step-up the fight against illegal drugs.

This is a very timely call for everyone to be vigilant and to help each other protect each one from drug pushers.

Actually, this has been our call for a long time. I’ve always advocated for the promotion of the family, to have quality time for each and every member of the family. This way, parents will know what is happening with the children.

We must understand that the responsibility for solving the problem of illegal drugs does not rest with police authorities alone. We are all vulnerable to the effects of illegal drugs. Each of us must do something to help in the campaign against illegal drugs.

Congratulations to our good friend and hardworking mayor of Dagupan City, Hon. Belen Fernandez for the Seal of Good Financial Housekeeping Award by the Department of Interior & Local Government (DILG)!

Dagupan City is, indeed, fortunate for having you as the mother-leader of the city. May you continue to reap more awards that keep you inspired to keep working harder for the betterment of Dagupan and its constituents.
