Give man a fish, and he will eat for a day; teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” — Confucius

THE summer-heat is beginning to show in the political environment.

Locally, Mayor Belen Fernandez’s big tarpaulins have mushroomed in every nook and cranny of the city.

To serve the wannabes notice she remains comfortable in her roost?

In the provincial front, Sendong So is adroitly drawing up stratagems to boost the stocks of his “wards” – former Cong. Mark Cojuangco and Calasiao Mayor Mark Macanlalay, while the master of the house, Guv’nor Spines seems to be taking it easy, seemingly sure his traditional bailiwicks are in the bag of heir apparent son Pogi, whose UP speech coaches see a Demosthenes in the making.

We prefer to focus the limelight on the vice gubernatorial race, with Ferdie Calimlim in solid defense of the fort from a youthful challenger, Mayor Mark Macanlalay of vote-rich Calasiao.

In the presidential race, the public expects three corners among Jojo Binay, Mar Roxas and Bongbong Marcos.

But there are unusual ongoing moves which could radically change with Grace Poe making a sprint to the front line, edging out Binay and Roxas. If the syllogism moves farther, the political scene could go to Bongbong and Grace on collision course, which the power brokers are avoiding like hell. With this Marcosian stalemate, expect Gonzalo’s pet bet Rody Duterte to wrest the front seat.

It’s still a very fluid and exciting crossword puzzle, folks.

Three close friends have just crossed the bar leaving many hearts in shambles and in a state of mourning.

They are key media personalities: former local press club president Rannie Jim Manaois, 55; former People’s Digest editor in chief, Rhoda Montemayor Palinar, wife of Ike Palinar, 60, and civic-business leader Liberato “Tato” Donato, 70.

Except Rhoda who died in the U.S., we saw a few days back   Rannie Jim and Tato with no sign of ailment in their auras. It is for this reason that we ask our readers to exercise caution in their daily lives, mindful of the little discomforts and abuse to their health systems.

Rhoda’s sons Marco and Ike Jr., texted us, that her remains will be in state at the Montemayors’ ancestral home in Banaoang, Sta. Barbara beginning on May 17. Interment is on May 20 at Eternal Gardens.

As of this writing, friends and colleagues were preparing a necro rites for their comrade Rannie whose remains are at St, John’s Chapel. Interment will be on Saturday at 8 a.m. at Eternal Gardens.

We last saw Tato at the wake of former Councilor Eva Beltran-Sta. Maria a few days back.

There was absolutely no sign he was going to die. His widow, the former Vicky Lopez, described his passing “sudden and shocking.” Tato’s body is at Quiogue chapel. Interment will be on May 20 at the Roman Catholic Church.

We wish our friends’ souls eternal rest.

It’s national fish week in Pangasinan on May 18-21, particularly in Lingayen town, when leaders and stakeholders of the Philippine Association of Fish Producers, Inc. headed by local boy Ed Maramba will converge at the Sison Auditorium to iron out the kinks on why the country if not the whole of Asia can’t meet their self-sufficiency in marine resources.

Guest of honor and speaker is DA Secretary Proceso Alcala.

The PFGFI, by the way, came from the womb of the Fishpond Owners Operators Fisherfolk Association, Inc. (FOOFADCI) organized by balikbayan Alfred Dawana.

Foodfadci, which began as Mayor Belen’s staunchest ally in the production of robust fish, especially the overly praised bangus, has gone a long way indeed.

Being gifted by the Lingayen Gulf and the Agno River, it’s but natural that the province wields the leadership in the marine industry.

Congratulations, Ed Maramba and the PAFPI and the FOOFADCI!
