Worldly politics is back

Among mortals second thoughts are wisest.” —- Euripides

IT’S back to mundane politics in Pangasinan, a week after the Papal visit.

Monitor publisher Orly Guirao and this columnist recently had a brief chat with Caloocan Congressman Egay Erice at a coffee shop along Katipunan Rd. that made a peep at the country’s presidential razzle dazzle.

If you know Cong. Egay who regularly figures on national television to dispute anti administration rhetoric, you can predict what he had to say on it — it’s P-noy’s man who will be next president! Sorry, Mayor Sammy Rosario, but that’s how Egay views the presidential equation.

Orly, a hardnosed Marcos loyalist has his loyalty, reportedly shelved after he heard Egay.

We attended Egay’s birthday bash a couple of years back at his palatial home — and what a star-studded guests’ list he had. We were seated near Mar Roxas and Korina but settled beside now Congressman Sam Pagdilao and Rey Quizon whose wife Rose, manager of Mugshots in Calasiao town, is the sister of Raul Ang, a close buddy of P-noy.

For Pangasinan’s interest, Egay has a broad view of Pangasinan’s gubernatorial prognosis, taking into account former Rep. Mark Cojuangco’s kinship with the president. He took with unbelief local talks that Mark is supporting Jojo Binay’s presidential bid.

When asked about his feverish campaign to reset the SK polls to October, he said — to this effect — the Filipino youth should be given a better chance to become responsible leaders of the nation.

As it is, the SK is being damaged by criticisms it has became worse than its adult copycats.

Reminds us of the late Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson’s despise of a greenhorn politician as “so young yet so corrupt.”

In a parting shot, Egay said to this effect that there should be no doubt our next president would be P-noy’s man.

Will it be Mar Roxas? Egay gave a Mona Lisa smile. How about Grace Poe, the phenomenal political star?” Maybe vice,” he said. End of meeting.

We note with satisfaction the dynamic’s of a vibrant democracy in the restored unity between the Dagupan City Hall and Sangguniang Panlungsod as a result of their acrimonious debate over the city budget.

After some nitpicking, mutual trust has been restored.

We congratulate the councilors from their growing maturity and the mayor’s mother hen instincts, validating our old’s saying kung walang konting away walang lambingan.”

It’s bandied about that Sendong So is responsible for many politicians going to Mark Cojuangco’s camp than what Mark is doing himself. Some observers especially the local media say he is a better campaigner than Mark.

On the other side, it seems Pogi Espino is yet to hold a candle on the abilidad of the erpat in marshalling allies and supporters, but a survey this early shows he is leading in the grassroots.

Let’s watch how this rivalry shape up in the days to come.

Stiffer laws should apply on the rapist of a 24-year old girl, a dearly loved member of the Sabangan Baptist church, who was molested last December 2013.  The case is in the sala of Judge Caridad Galvez, a most judicious judge (redundancy is intended to stress her revered competence).
