Make Way for Arts

Johanne R. Macob

I WAS reading articles on social media when my good friend, who is a good artist by the way, pm-ed (private messaged) me on Facebook. He told me they have this art exhibit called “The Mansamit Show” at the Liongoren Gallery in Tapuac, Dagupan City. I’m proud of him, and I’m an arts fan.

The exhibit opened last Nov. 22 and it’s running till next month. If my memory serves me right, I think it’s his group’s second year to hold an exhibit. The ‘show’ last year was staged by two artists groups- Agini and Aya – composed of 25 years olds and below. This year, the two groups joined to form one big group, “Biskeg Pangasinan.” The same artists group supports the Sagur Artists Village in Malasiqui, that I talked about in my last column.

Every Saturday, the artists conduct free workshops for any arts enthusiast in the exhibit venue. I am certain these artists can do better if they get support, or more support from art patrons.A good way to support arts and artists is to organize events for them, pretty much like how one civic organization organized a sports events for our budding players. A good way to support arts and artists is to organize events for them, pretty much like how one civic organization organized a sports events for our budding players. This week, I learned there’s this musical show that another youth org in the province is hosting. So a group can organize an ‘artsy’ event where Biskeg can act as facilitators or organize a contest where their members can be participants. There are a lot of opportunities and activities being organized for various interests, but seemingly, only a few for the visual artists. There is the sand sculpting competition every Pista’y Dayat, and poster making in some town fiestas, etc. Notably, earlier this year, the works of a national artist have been showcased in an exhibit at the Sison Auditorium. Still, I believe we can do a lot f more for our artists.

I do hope that arts will soon be given ample space and focus in this generation. Perhaps my memory of my ‘artsy’ college hasn’t left me. Having been being part of the College of Arts and Communication at UP Baguio, with the fine arts students as neighbors, there’s no way for me not to fall in love with arts. Add to that, I have good friends that are artists. Yes, arts is but a lovely and healthy field of learning.

I hope Punch readers will visit their art exhibit.
