We condemn Orly Navarro’s shooting

The greatest incitement to wrongdoing is the hope of doing so with impunity,” Cicero

IT was our beloved nanay, the former Aurora Martinez’s  87th birthday Friday on August 29.

We had a modest, fun-filled get together at Charlie Ngo’s Star Plaza.

Last year, this woman of great faith was down for two months and was in the hospital with NGT feeding.

Because of her age, brothers and sisters could only look at one another with soulful understanding and lots of prayer.

Suddenly, it occurred to us to invite our friend Eddie Quinto of Mangaldan town who has a healing gift which was developed scientifically in a Tokyo medical center to gently work on her back, around the sciatic nerve, and, lo and behold, in less than an hour, mother showed great relief. What a miracle!

This isn’t an ad for Eddie Quinto. This little item is just meant to say something brief about our dearest nanay who, together with tatay, the late Pio Velasco, once dubbed the Jerry Vale of Dagupan, was able to raise ten children in a most loving way ever.

During her birthday, each one of us would say a little piece about her and about us, her children.

To this writer, nanay’s impact is her powerful though subtle role in the purification of the soul.  She always is like a mind-cleansing mechanism.

Whatever she told us to do, we did without question, literally. Little did we realize that those “errands” given so lovingly worked like a fountain of pure joy.

Thru this little space, we greet da most wonderful nanay many happy returns of the day.

His listeners must be missing kumpadre Orly Navarro’s early morning broadcasts at FM Radio Station DWIZ Dagupan.

But their missing him is more than made up for by the nationwide news about him. Yes, the newscaster has become the news.  He almost lost his life in the hands of a neighbor in brgy. Pantal, Dagupan City, who shot him.

By his own account and the police, particularly Chief Chris Abarahano, the would-be assassin who has been arrested is the son of his kumpadre.

Barangay Pantal, inspite of the clean-up drive by pretty Kapitana Julie Ann Fernandez Perez,  still reeks of the illegal drug trade. Orly knows very well and deplores this in his program without let-up.

Being popular, Orly – we told him this —  could have easily made it to the  last city council elections but backed out, probably realizing that media and politics don’t mix in the long run. Orly is often sought by legions of friends and people who treat him like a superman with great influence.

The shooting that almost snuffed his life is an indictment of the country’s peace and order condition and most alarmingly of the government’s failure to bring to justice   several killings of newsmen,

We have condemned the attempt on his life along with leaders of the press. There’ve been three mediamen here who have been shot, Orly, Alan Sison and Jaime Aquino. But they are like supermen. They could not be felled by bullets.

Visiting him at the Pangasinan Medical Center hours after the shooting, we found him in high spirits but confused, recounting scenes,  some frightening  realizing his fragile life,  and the fear he could really have died from that shot.

Knowing him to be so attached to his family, we felt his anguish over things he was thrust into by his job and our fragile environment.

It’s just too sad a simple police story is being muddled by politics.

We appeal to the authorities to stick to their job with professionalism. At press time, we find the names of Mayor Belen Fernandez and two high police officers dragged in the attack to show that it was planned. We have full trust in the authorities to  come up with the crime’s solution fast.

For our friend Orly, we sincerely thank God for having survived the attack. The paucity that he needs so much while recovering in the hospital should give him a wider and better perspective of things.

With family and close friends beside him, whose company, we’re sure, he has missed a lot for his go-go-go work, will help in getting him  recharged, refreshed and get back to wellness and normalcy.

Let’s hope and pray  the crime is finally solved soonest.

NOTES: while encoding this, our friend, former Goverenor Oca Orbos called up to extend to Orly his prayers and wishes for his fast recovery… and to Pangasinenses to preserve the gains the province has earned through their leaders and their industry. He also is sending his regards to Guv’nor Spines with a little advice to visit Orly for him.

We replied, “already done.”
