THE Provincial Health Office (PHO) warned the public anew about health risks and common diseases brought about by extreme heat during summer time.

PHO Nurse Rhodalia Binay-an reiterated PHO’s advisory to take precautionary measures against diseases that are viral, i.e., sunburn, sore eyes, cough and colds, food and water-borne diseases, rabies as well as heatstroke.

To prevent sunburn and heatstroke, people are advised not to stay indoor or shaded areas from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m…

“When swimming at the beach or river, people should avoid over exposure to the sun and should drink lots of fluids to avoid being sunburned and suffer heatstroke,” Binay-an said during the “Pantongtongan Tayo” (Pag-usapan Natin) radio program of Philippine Information Agency (PIA) on Tuesday.

To prevent sore eyes, a viral infection caused by the dryness of eyes, combined with dust particles and other allergens, the most effective way to prevent it is proper hygiene and regular hand washing.

Likewise, she said the public should be wary of flu and colds during summer caused by unpredictable changes in weather condition.

She also warned that hot climate easily spoils stored food and can cause food and water-borne diseases.

Kung may bubbles at maasim na ang pagkain huwag na nating kainin pa,” said Binay-an, adding that spoiled food that causes food-borne diseases can lead to dehydration or serious illness if not treated immediately.

Meanwhile, PHO warned the public of sudden attacks by pet animals during summertime. Rachel Zarate, PHO health education and promotion officer, said, dogs and cats also feel discomfort and are prone to attack people.

To prevent rabies bites, pet owners should monitor their pet’s health, and have their pets vaccinated, feed them well, provide clean water to drink and give them a bath regularly. (PIA Pangasinan/EMBS)
