Price of Dagupan bangus shoots up

SHORTAGE DUE TO COLD SEASON

THE price of Dagupan bangus is now P10 higher because of the felt shortage of supply.

This was confirmed by Dagupan City Agriculturist Emma Molina who said the city’s fishponds and fish pens normally produce 8 to 10 tons of bangus weekly before the cold months but the number has reduced to 5 to 6 weekly because of the cold weather.

She added that there is also a shortage of bangus in normal commercial sizes in the market and the cold weather is also the culprit. “Bangus does not have the appetite to eat during the cold season,” she said.

She clarified that the series of demolition of illegal fishery structures had no significant effect on the supply of bangus because bangus growers had anticipated the dismantling of illegal fish structures and were prepared for contingencies.

Nonetheless, around 45 to 50 tons of bangus weekly are still traded at the Bagsakan in Magsaysay market. The total volume includes bangus produced from Sual, Bolinao and Anda.

To guide consumers, the city government has started the labeling of Dagupan bangus to distinguish it from those produced from other towns and provinces.

Meanwhile, the city hall is set to deploy the two new backhoes for the dredging of rivers at the Barangay Bonuan Gueset-Sabangan area, Barangays Pantal, Lucao, Calmay and Carael in preparation for the rainy season. (Nora Dominguez)
