URDANETA CITY—A murder case was filed against a jail officer of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) here after he shot and killed his alleged intended target and wounded six others last Friday.

P/Supt. Jeff Fanged, chief of Urdaneta City police, said the suspect JO1 Roderick Escat, 34, resident of barangay San Jose Urdaneta City is now detained at the BJMP following his voluntary surrender to his superior J/Chief Inspector Roque Sison III, on January 30.

Escat shot Rolando Norberte and attempts by others to stop the shooting led to their being shot as well by the jail officer who started shooting indiscriminately.

The injured victims were Eusebio Escat (brother of the suspect), Segundo Escat (uncle of the suspect), Dominador Soliven, Efren Quiniones, Romulo Norberte and Rommel Norberte, all are residents of Zone 4 barangay San Jose this city.

The victims were brought to the hospital for treatment but Norberte was declared dead on arrival.

Fanged said the suspect was attending the vigil for a departed neighbor when Norberte arrived. The suspect left soon as he spotted the victim and returned with his service firearm and started shooting the victim without any warning.

Initial investigation showed the suspect shot the victim over an old grudge, being beaten up by the victim and his friends 3 years ago. (Hilda Austria)
