Fake bishop exposed, arrested and freed

HEALING MASS RACKET

MANGALDAN—Leave it to criminal minds to go to any extent just to earn quick bucks. A new racket uncovered is the holding of “healing masses.”

The Mangaldan police station (MPS) warned the public against a 65- year old man disguised as bishop, holding ‘healing masses’ in different towns in the province including Mangaldan following a circular issued by Arch. Socrates Villegas.

According to residents, a “Bishop” Eduardo Roxas, wearing the catholic clergy’s vestments would hold healing masses in different places in the town, where he distributes envelopes for tithe and offering.

Supt. Jackie Candelario, chief of MPS said their station received the circular letter from Villegas on the modus of the fake bishop.

Mangaldan residents began to suspect Roxas was a fake because not one was known to have been cured of his or her illness after attending his ‘healing’ masses.

Rev. Fr. Hernan Caronongan, parish priest of the St. Tomas Aquianas denied the affiliation of Roxas, a native of Bulacan, with the parish.

Roxas, who was also seen conducting healing mass in the Virgin’s Well in Manaoag last month, was finally arrested.

However, since no formal complaint was filed against him, Candelario said Roxas had to be released and was simply asked to stop his activities and to return to Bulacan. (Hilda Austria)
