Twenty teams vie for honors
FESTIVALS OF THE NORTH
DAGUPAN’s streets will be bright with the colors of northern Luzon on April 27 when the city holds the Festivals of the North streetdancing competition, one of the highlights of the 2014 Bangus Festival.
As of last week, 20 groups have signed up for the competition, all champion street dancing teams from different cities and municipalities in the northern and central Luzon areas.
There will also be guest performers from the Sinulog Festival in Cebu and a street dance group from Suntan Kudarat in Mindanao.
The Festivals of the North, a brainchild of Mayor Belen Fernandez when she was still vice mayor, is a dance expositon of different festivals from the different provinces and regions featuring their winning street dance groups.
Seeing action in the Festivals of the North are champions from Pangasinan, including the Pakwan Festival of Bani, Goat Festival in Balungao, Mango-Bamboo Festival in San Carlos City, Corn Festival in Sto.Tomas, Abacca -Bamboo Festival in Basista, Malangsi Festival in Bayambang, Bagoong Festival of Lingayen, and the Gilon-gilon in host Dagupan.
From other parts of Luzon are: Pindangan Festival in San Fernando City, La Union; Tobacco Festival in Candon City, Ilocos Sur; Abrenian Kawayan Festival in Bangued, Abra; Basi Festival in Naguilian, La Union; Ani Festival in Diras, Ilocos Norte; Kannawidan Ylocos in Cauayan, Ilocos Sur; Pamulinawin Festival in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Mango Festival in Masinloc, Zambales; Guling-Guling Festival in Paoay, Ilocos Norte; Adivay Festival in Kabayan, Benguet; Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City; Fiesta Republika ng Bulakan from Guiguinto, Bulacan.
Fernandez said she is happy to restore the Festivals of The North event, a popular feature of the Bangus Festival celebration under her chairmanship in the past, in response to the clamor of residents and balikabayans.
This year, the grand prize will be P400,000.
Other prizes at stake are are: P200, 000 (1st runner-up); P80, 000 (2nd runner-up); P50,000 (3rd runner-up); and P30,000 (4th runner-up).
The winners of minor awards such as Best in Costume and Best in Choreography will also bag P10, 000 each.–LVM
