Nigerian student drowns in Calasiao resort

CALASIAO–A Nigerian medical student drowned in a swimming pool in Calasiao town at 10:30 p.m. of April 1 while attending a birthday party with fellow Nigerian and Filipino classmates.

The victim, identified as Callistus Oshiorugif Obinah, 29, was studying in one of the universities in Dagupan and residing at Pogo Grande, Dagupan City.

According to police investigation, Obinah apparently dived in the  deeper part of the swimming pool and never surfaced again.

When others in the party noticed that Obinah has not been seen for a while, his girlfriend, with the the help of the pool caretaker, found the victim underwater motionless.

Obinah was immediately pulled out of  the water, then rushed to the Trauma Medical Center in Dagupan City, after efforts to revive him by his group failed. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Before the incident, the victim was reportedly drinking liquor with the group.

The caretaker of the resort, ALU VAI Resort located in Barangay Banaoang, said the party-goers violated the rules of the establishment against bringing alcoholic beverages.—LVM
