MANAOAG—About a million pilgrims and devotees are expected to pay homage and pray to the miraculous Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag this Holy Week and the local government, with the police, is ready for the crowd.

P/Chief Inspector Edison Revita, town police chief, said preparations have been set with different offices of the municipal government and the jeepney and tricycle operators groups to ensure the safety and welfare of visitors.

Revita said the local police will be on full alert while barangay tanods and augmentation forces from the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office will help secure the pilgrimage town.

Four police assistance hubs are installted at the entrance areas while a pilgrims assistance hub can be found inside the church premises.

The bulk of the visitors are expected to troop here starting on the 17th until Easter Sunday.

Every year, thousands of devotees from different towns and cities in Pangasinan converge in Manaoag at around 3:00 p.m. on Maundy Thursday and stay overnight at the Shrine as part of their yearly devotion.

Major roads will be closed to trucks or buses that are not bound for the church.

Owners of private residential houses have also requested to welcome vehicles to park in their frontage and may ask for a minimal fee, Revita  added.—Tita Roces
