1 chikungunya case reported; dengue victims decrease
LINGAYEN–A 12-year old girl from Sual has been reported as the first victim of chikungunya, another mosquito-borne viral infection, in the province.
Dr. Ana De Guzman, provincial health office (PHO) chief, said the chikungunya case was recorded at the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City.
The patient, whose blood tested positive of the viral infection, has been cured through hydration and provision of medications for the different related symptoms.
Chikungunya is generally the same as dengue, except that the latter has a hemorrhagic stage. The symptoms are similar, including fever that last for two to three days, muscle pain, swelling of joints, and fatigue, among others.
She described chikungunya is a milder form of dengue.
On the other hand, cases of the deadlier dengue have decreased from 1,526 cases in January-July 15 last year to 993 cases in the same period this year, according to the PHO.
However, while the total number of dengue patients decreased, the number of fatalities were the same at five cases during the comparative period.
The two viral ailments have the same type of mosquito carriers, the Aedes mosquitoes.
The PHO chief said included in their high risk/ watch list are Urdaneta City, Sta. Maria, Rosales, San Carlos City, Calasiao, San Fabian, Bayambang, Bani, Sual, and Sta. Barbara.–Johanne R. Macob
