Delisting of San Carlos as “AOC” pleaded

SAN CARLOS CITY—The re-electionist mayor here wants his city delisted as area of concern (AOC) because of the negative impression it creates about the city and its people.

“They always think San Carlos is chaotic when in fact our city is one of the most peaceful given its population so I see no reason why the city should remain in the watch list of Commission on Elections and other authorities,” Mayor Julier Resuello said.

The city has been tagged consistently as “hot spot” or priority area of concern due to history of political violence here for the gun slaying of its mayor in the 2007 elections.

Resuello’s late father, then Mayor Julian Resuello, was gunned down during the May 2007 elections at the city auditorium. Julier was then a mayoralty candidate while his father was his running mate as he was already in his third term then.

He and his brother, Joseres Resuello, who substituted for their slain dad, won as mayor and vice mayor respectively here and are now seeking re-election.

Resuello said he wants the city delisted from Comelec’s watch list to “regain the confidence of his city mates, as well as visitors who come to the city.”

The mayoralty post here has always been a fight between two families for many elections already, the Resuellos and the Sorianos.

His father’s death was attributed to political rivalry but the case is still pending.

“We don’t want the people to live in fear,” he added.

Resuello said while he welcomes the augmentation police forces he said their presence must not be given political color.

The Resuello brothers are with the Nationalist People’s Coalition while their opponents, father and son tandem of former mayor Douglas Soriano and his son, Chester for mayor and vice mayor respectively, are with the Liberal Party. –Eva Visperas
