ROSALES—Motorcycle-riding-in-tandem hitmen (MRTH), operating with impunity in the province, gunned down last week a retired senior police officer here.

Paulito Alabanza, a retired police senior superintendent who served as police provincial director of Kalinga province, died from several gunshot wounds while undergoing treatment.

Alabanza, a native of Baguio City, was shot inside a canteen in front of the New Rosales Coliseum in Barangay Casanicolasan, which he owns, at 12:40 p.m. of March 6.

The victim was shot several times by a still unidentified suspect using a Cal. 45 pistol as evidenced by five spent shells and three slugs found by investigators at the crime scene.

Alabanza suffered three gunshot wounds in different parts of his body and died while undergoing surgical operation at the Dr. Chan Memorial Hospital in Barangay Carmen West, Rosales.

Chief Inspector Jackson Seguin, officer-in-charge of the Rosales Police, said based on witnesses accounts, the gunman (wearing a white T-shirt and denim jeans, and had no cover on his face) boarded a black Honda Wave motorcycle, driven by another unidentified person, after the shooting and sped towards the southeast direction leading to Balungao town.

Elements of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) were called to the site to gather evidence that could lead to the suspects.

Possible motives so far established by the police include a love triangle and an old business grudge.
