SOME 150 kilometers of rivers in north-central Pangasinan have so far been covered by Task Force Kalikasan in its clean-up and restoration campaign.

Avenix Arenas, spokesperson of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) that supervises the task force, said the rivers that were already cleaned up were those in Binmaley, Lingayen, Bugallon, Labrador, San Fabian and part of San Carlos City.

Arenas, speaking at the KBP forum in Dagupan City last week, said the project involves the removal of structures were erected by fish farmers and their financiers engaged in fish pen operations and the dredging of the silt that accumulated over the years.

FOR ROADS

Some of the dredged silt materials were used as base for an 869-meter new road that links the island barangay of Salapinao to the mainland in Binmaley

Binmaley town celebrated its newly cleaned rivers last February by holding the first Sigay Festival to mark the return of assorted fish in its waterways.

Meanwhile, some dredged materials at the Salasa River in Bugallon will be used for another road project.

The clean up drive was launched in August last year as part of the provincial government’s environmental protection program to restore the eco-systems in the rivers, make them navigable again and to enhance the flow of water run-off water from inland to the Lingayen Gulf.–LM
