Grassfires cause tripping of transmission line

THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has appealed to communities hosting transmission facilities across the country to be more vigilant in guarding and protecting high-voltage transmission lines against grassfires, especially during the summer season.

A grassfire in the neighboring province of Nueva Ecija was identified as the cause of the tripping of the 500-kilo volt San Jose-San Manuel transmission line last March 26, which caused power interruption in parts of Luzon.

NGCP also asked residents not to start a fire, plant trees, set up antennas or build structures under, around and near transmission facility structures.

POWER INTERRUPTIONS

Meanwhile, NGCP gave assurance that it is prepared with contingency plans for possible power interruptions given the higher energy demand during the summer months.

The transmission firm said regular maintenance works are ongoing not just in substations across the country, but also on high-voltage transmission lines to ensure that these facilities are capable of carrying power to grid customers.
