SAN FABIAN cyclist Rene Esteban burst into speed in the last of four rounds and never looked back to arrive all by himself at the finish line of the 2nd Lingayen Cycling Challenge held on February 22.

The 28-year old 5’2” veteran rider from Barangay Angio floated with the lead pack of 14 riders in the first three rounds, then made his move after sensing his rivals were on the verge of losing steam to pocket the P5,000 top prize.

Esteban clocked the 132-kilometer flat trek race, sponsored by Mayor Ernesto ‘Jonas’ Castañeda Jr., in 3:30:10, 48 seconds faster than second placer Rex Carino of Mangaldan and third finisher Bernard Biasura, also of San Fabian.

Bugallon stalwart Allan Patrick Garcia landed fourth while Christian Linda of San Fabian was fifth.

Rounding up the top ten in descending order were: Jimmico Brosio, Jefferson Valdez, Arden Fernandez, Reginaldo Calosa, and Alex Tembreza.

There were 69 starters and 38 survived the sun-bleached event supported by Lingayen’s well-known philanthropist Engr. Geraldo Tiangson.

The wheel-by-wheel account was aired live over Sonshine Radio DZRD 981 Khz AM.—JAG, Jr.
