STO. TOMAS–The giant white corn monument, built as a tribute to the town’s Guinness World Record for longest barbecue grill early this year, was unveiled on October 2.

Undersecretary Antonio Villar Jr, head of the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group who served the town’s mayor for more than 20 years, led guests and townsfolk in the simple ceremonies. The unveiling celebration coincided with the joint birthday celebration of his wife, Mayor Vivien Villar, and their daughter Marie Antonnette Villar-Pescador.

Mr. Villar said the corn monument is a testament to their town’s reputation as the “small but terrible (impressive)” in terms of accomplishments.

Mayor Villar, meanwhile, said the new landmark, which stands six-feet tall at the town center in front of the municipal hall, will serve as reminder for the present and future generations of what cooperation can achieve

The corn barbecue organized on February 11 this year for the town’s centennial anniversary celebration, measured 3,803.96 m (12480 ft. 2 in) long and has been certified by the Guinness Records as the longest so far in the world.

Vice Mayor Timoteo Villar III, who served as the corn festival chairman, told The PUNCH that the corn marker symbolizes the residents’ dream to make their town world- famous.

“It showcases our unsurpassed unity as we stood behind one another from day one until our difficult yet successful quest was attained. It is a labor of love,” he said. #
