Mapandan motocross challenge today

THE much awaited First Mapandan Invitational Motocross Challenge will be held today in conjunction with the celebration of the town’s fiesta.

According to Mayor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr., who led the organization of this two-wheeled event and the first of its kind to be held in his town, the Mapandan event is the second leg of the province’s nationally sanctioned race by the National Motocross Cycling Association, next to San Fabian.

Like the San Fabian affair, the Mapandan event is under the auspices of Roland Villegas, the Region 1 director of the national association, and himself, the national motocross champion in the executive class.

Villegas, the ABC president of San Fabian town, said top guns in Philippine motocross racing led by 2003 Asian champion and nine-time and current open national titlist Glen Aguilar, former seven-time champion Jovie Saulog, youthful Kenneth San Andres and the ‘dark horse’ Bebet dela Cruz, will participate.

The quartet is expected to receive stiff competition from the riders of La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Isabela, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Batangas, Bicol, and Manila.

According to project coordinator and municipal alderman Mamerto Eden, Jr., the whole day race —bankrolled by the municipal government—will be divided into 11 categories with cash prizes of more than P100,000 plus trophies and medals up grabs.

The Pro-Open division champion stands to win P10,000 top prize while the first and second runners-up are worth P7,000 and P5,000, respectively. Fourth and fifth placers earn P2,000 a piece.

“This will be the first time that we will stage this affair, and we will continue holding it yearly because our Mapandan race is the second official leg of the province and that will be a prestige for the town,” said the sports-minded Calimlim.

“Our other objective is to encourage responsible motoring by doing it through the professional way,” Calimlim added.

The newly built one kilometer treacherous dirt track is located at barangay Luyan, three kilometers south of the town proper.
