Pangasinan historian dies, honored at UP

Pangasinan historian Dr. Rosario Mendoza Cortes (1922-2009) who passed away on January 21 in the United States was honored at the University of the Philippines.

Last February 3, a necrological service was held at the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice in Diliman campus organized by the UP Department of History and Philippine Historical Association and attended by colleagues, former students, friends and close relatives. Several prominent historians spoke reminiscing and recollecting Cortes’ contributions to Philippine historiography.

Cortes who grew up in San Carlos City pioneered in the writing of Philippine local history by chronicling the history of Pangasinan in three volumes. She took all her undergraduate and graduate degrees at UP and became a visiting professor in an Indonesian university. Appointed professor emeritus after retirement, she edited a book on Philippine presidents and co-authored a general history of the Philippines.

Her remains were interned at the Himlayang Pilipino. Cortes is survived by her children. (ESFernandez)
