Capitol OKs revival of P8-B water supply partnership
THE Pangasinan provincial government welcomed the move of the Manila Water Philippine Ventures (MWPV) to seek the revival of discussions on the stalled P8-billion bulk water concession agreement.
In a joint statement on January 26, both parties expressed willingness to explore a new partnership for water supply in the province, after mutually terminating the concession agreement at the end of 2023, that will re-evaluate the original conditions for the benefit of Pangasinenses.
Under the concession agreement, MWPV commits to invest P8-billion over the next 25 years to establish infrastructure sourcing water from the Agno River through riverbank filtration technology.
The project is set to benefit 14 towns and cities, including Villasis, Malasiqui, Mangaldan, Sta. Barbara, Calasiao, Mapandan, Manaoag, Binmaley, Lingayen, San Jacinto, San Fabian, and the cities of Dagupan, Urdaneta, and San Carlos.
Recognizing the province’s economic growth as 7th in population and one of the largest provinces in terms of land area, both parties stress the importance of adequate water infrastructure.
Manila Water’s Chief Operating Officer for Non-East Zone Melvin Tan cited the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in key metropolitan cities, including Pangasinan.
Manila Water presently operates in Calasiao town through a 25-year joint venture agreement with the Calasiao Water District for the development, rehabilitation, management, and maintenance of water facilities, serving over 95,000 people across 24 barangays. (Eva Visperas)
