Singing of ‘Dagupan Hymn’ during flag ceremonies now mandatory
THE Sangguniang Panlungsod of Dagupan passed a resolution making the singing of the Dagupan Hymn during flag-raising ceremonies across all schools and government agencies in the city.
Resolution No. R-6359, authored by Councilor Dennis Canto, requests the Department of Education’s Schools Division Superintendent of Dagupan, and the heads of government agencies in the city to include the singing or playing of the Dagupan Hymn in all their flag-raising ceremonies.
The current administration of Mayor Belen Fernandez will finally have both the Dagupan Hymn and Balon Kabuasan March as integral parts of Dagupan’s rich culture and history.
Canto said he sees the mandatory singing of the Dagupan Hymn as an “expression of love” for the city. “The singing of the Dagupan Hymn will be a way to demonstrate the people’s patriotism and love for their cherished hometown,” he said.
Penned by songwriter Rex Catubig, the Dagupan Hymn encapsulates the city’s history, culture, traditions, as well as the resilience and industriousness of its people and their dreams and aspirations.
Although the hymn was never officially adopted as the city’s official hymn, it was sung during official affairs of the city government, during the terms of former Mayors Alipio Fernandez Jr. and Benjamin Lim for over 20 years.
On the invitation of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and former councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, Hermano mayor of the 2015 city fiesta, Catubig, songwriter and PUNCH columnist, were asked to feature the hymn during the Dagupan City Fiesta celebration 2015.
Canto recalled that it was at the city council session when Catubig said his composition of Dagupan Hymn, along with the Dagupan March, are his “gifts to the people of Dagupan.” (Leonardo Micua)
