REMOVE ALL IRRELEVANT VISUAL MATERIALS

DAYS before the start of classes in public schools in Pangasinan on Tuesday, August 29, not a few grumbling teachers were still busy preparing their classrooms to comply with the directive of Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte to remove all decorations in classroom walls – including traditional visual aids.

Joan Sabado of the DepEd Regional Office I Public Affairs Unit, said while Regional Director Dr. Tolentino Aquino echoed Inday Sara’s instructions to all public school teachers in the four provinces, the latter qualified that only those deemed irrelevant to current lessons should be removed.

Among these for lower grades, are mere reminders that are not relevant to the lessons while high school classrooms must only post visual aids for current lessons.

Hindi naman kailangan na nakaposte lahat sa walls ang mga aralin. Alisin ang mga ito at mag focus sa pagtuturo ang mga guro”, she said.

Aquino specifically ordered visual aids used in previous school year be removed.

This means that teachers will have to post and remove visual aids periodically (every grading period) so their classrooms will have an ambiance, bright and neat classrooms, conducive to learning.

It will be recalled that Duterte’s order to remove all visual aids in classrooms was met initially with intense opposition by netizens who claim visual aids are important elements in learning, and that students are likely to learn more when looking at things.

They belied Duterte’s claims that visual aids cause loss of focus and concentration among students. Duterte, however, stood by her directive. (Ahikam Pasion)
