PANGASINAN 2 recaptured its crown it lost to Dagupan City in 2018 when it harvested 91 gold, 56 silver and 67 bronze medals in the just concluded 2023 Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet hosted by San Carlos City from May 14 to 19.

R1AA champion in 2015, 2016 and 2017, Pangasinan 2 was all set to score a grand slam in 2018 but Dagupan City stopped it in the games held in Alaminos City. Dagupan won again in 2019 when Ilocos Norte hosted the meet after two back-to-back first runner-up finishes.

When COVID-19 pandemic raged from 2020 till 2022, the R1AA Meet was in hiatus for three long years.

Pangasinan 2 dominated basketball secondary  girls, arnis, table tennis, wushu and swimming to retake its R1AA crown.

Ilocos Norte was a distant first runner-up with 60 gold, 50 silver and 43 bronze medals, while Laoag City in second runner-up amassed 48 gold, 58 silver and 43 bronze medals.

Pangasinan 1 was third runner-up with 39 gold, 44 silver and 57 bronze.

Defending R1AA champion Dagupan managed only fifth in the overall standing with 35 gold, 25 silver and 31 bronze, but won the titles in Aero Gymnastics due to astounding  performances by its Women Artistic Gymnasts (WAGs) and in elementary boys volleyball and basketball.

Other results: 6^th place – Ilocos Sur (32 gold, 50 silver, 59 bronze); 7^th place – La Union (30 gold, 37 silver, 62 bronze); 8^th place – San Carlos City (27 gold, 25 silver 33 bronze); 9^th place – Vigan City (19 gold, 12 silver and 21 bronze);  10th place – Alaminos City (18 gold, 31 silver, 35 bronze); 11^th place – Urdaneta City (8 gold, 31 silver 25 bronze); 12^th place- San Fernando City (10 gold, 12 silver, 12 bronze); 13^th place – Candon City (54 gold, 9 silver, 19 bronze); and 14^th place – Batac City (2 gold, 1 silver, 12 bronze).

Next year’s meet will be hosted by Ilocos Norte, to be held at the newly built Marcos Stadium in Laoag City. (Leonardo Micua)
